Lippmann or Not?

Check out this polish!! Pretty right? I've been lemming Deborah Lippman's Ruby Red Slippers for some time now, and my hot little hand is wrapped around it... or is it?

While at CosmoProf '11, I made sure to hit (or try to hit) all the booths that had ANYTHING to do with nail polish, nail care, etc. One of the booths that I visited was the NYX booth. I was excited to see what they had lined up- last year I saw some pretty amazing glitter polishes in their NYX Girls Nail Polish collection. This year they launched a new Spa Collection, which, granted, included several pretty colors. I was first struck by the selection, until I noticed the bottles. Look familiar? They're the same as Deborah Lippmann bottles! Worse yet?  Check this particular polish out....

Oh yes, that IS a Deborah Lippman Ruby Red Slippers knock-off/dupe... in the very same bottle!

I understand that polishes can tend to look similar, and to an extent, it's acceptable, and even expected. However, to so blatantly rip-off such a well-known and loved polish? Lame.

What do you think? Does it bother you that NYX has seemingly copycatted a Deborah Lippmann?

Which would YOU buy?

  1. Honestly, I'm not surprised at all, after their sale debacle earlier this year. The company's response to that came off as a little snooty, smug, and condescending.

  2. If I were Lippmann, then yeah but nope. Companies dupe each other ALL the time but going for that bottle? That is a bit much.

  3. It's terrible to completely rip off such a well known and respected brand and woman! But in reality there are going to be so many people buying this dupe because it's so cheap. So sad, yet so true.

  4. that just seems so cheap of them. seriously nyx? what are you thinking?

  5. *sighs* tsk tsk tsk.. bad move nyx... I have no Lippmann polishes but I always like them from the swatches I've seen. I plan one day to have a Lippmann or two. :)

  8. It reminds me of Sinful Colors deliberately copying/mimicking OPI's collections, and making no attempts to disguise the similarities. Frankly, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Not everyone has the funds to afford the top-of-the-line lacquers, and it is nice to be able to have a more approachable option. The companies COULD be a bit more subtle and respectful about duping, though.

  9. It could have been a batch that Lippmann rejected for whatever reason. It was then sold to NYX.

  10. I have a couple of backups of the NYX in the old style bottles from when they first released that color. I love my Lippmann, but I wear that polish like crazy during football season (my college team's colors) and I can't afford to keep buying the Lippmann version when there was such a cheap alternative. I never really thought they were ripping Lippmann off until they changed the bottles. :(

  11. It may be a tad over the line to use the same bottle, but I see no problem with duping the polish. Nobody seemed to be outraged when Revlon duped Chanel Paradoxal, which at the time could have been considered a "well-known and loved polish." In fact, people hunted all over town for it, the same way they are now with Revlon Carbonite. And if Revlon used a bottle similar to Chanel's, people probably would have praised them for getting rid of their current, outdated bottles.

Since my budget is not a Lippmann-affording budget, I'd have no qualms about picking up the NYX polish.

    Just my 2¢.

  14. I personally dislike Miss Lipmman because of the snooty remark she did when people complained about "funky chunky" ... also I don't like the bottle shape and never have ;))
A few of her polishes do look great, granted, across the universe, bad romance or I know what boys like are awesome, but still. I just don't like the company and I think the bottles are ugly.

As far as dupes go, everyone gets duped, look at all the things coming from China that are dupes for whatever you want, and the bottle clearly states NYX ... so I personally have no problem with that.
If you have the money to pay for the original, do that, if not, buy the NYX. For me, it's as easy as that *gg* I want a pretty nailpolish and I don't care which name is labelled on the outside.
But sometimes I don't buy nailpolish because I dislike the bottle or the brush *gg*

  15. I'm not going to pay Lippmann prices for anything less than Unicorn Pee, which this is not. I may or (most likely) may not decide to pick this up, but either way, Lippmann will have lost nothing. Really, if you're duping someone else's polish, does it matter what bottle it's in? It's not like anyone will buy it thinking it's Lippmann.

  16. Hmm.. this is really looking the same with another name.. Lippmann isn't going to be happy..

I follow your blog now for a pretty long time and maybe you followed mine on Melaniesnailpolish (The Color Palette), but I moved to a new blog that fits my ideas. Maybe you would like to take a look at www.thecolorpaletteblog.blogspot.com
Maybe I see you there :)

  17. Who gives a poop? 18 dollars is ridiculous for a polish so I'd go with NYX any day. It's not like I'm supporting something that is truly evil. There are worse things in the world.

  18. I would buy the Nyx hands down. Why buy spend $16 on a polish if you can find it cheaper elsewhere?

  19. Just found this and had to say... Did Lippman really design her own bottles or did she order them from a wholesaler? Anyone can pick up polish making materials and make it. I'm not paying over 4 dollars for any polish. It chips, fades, peels et cetera. It's polish! I make hand/feet print dough in my kitchen instead of buying those over priced kits. Your going to tell me I'm duping a simple recipe? Polish is just a recipe. Mix black base with red glitter if you want. Who cares? Thank you to the companies who bring me affordable polish. I have two disabled children and I'm not looking to line Lippmans pockets with green. Especially when I know the cost of material and amount of inflated profit. If I want to pay someone else to make polish for me because I don't have the time, It wont be Lippman!

  20. My wallet loves NYX more! BTW, the huge price differende gets me thinking that maybe Deborah Lippmann is ripping us off? I recently found out that the Deborah Lippmann colors are exacly the sames as OPI. We cant say that also OPI is copy catting? Afterall, OPI is around for a long time. Anyhow, I love my wallet and my wallet love any brand that gives me top quality as cheap as possible.
